IRC is an independent non-profit organisation, working as an international knowledge centre in the field of water supply, sanitation, hygiene (WASH) and integrated water resources management (IWRM) in developing countries. IRC works with international and local partners in Africa, Latin America, South Asia and the Middle East to develop practical approaches, capacities and policies needed for poor people to access sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene services. IRC is a professional organisation with some 55 dedicated staff. To help achieve its ambitions IRC is currently seeking candidates for the position of:

(Senior) Programme Officer Strategic Communication


Main responsibility
The main responsibility for this function is to assist in strengthening IRC’s communication role as a global advocate for sustainable WASH services. For this a thorough understanding of processes of change and influencing is needed, as well as good knowledge of the potential of media and a creative mind to propose innovative and out of the box solutions. All of this takes place in teams in which inspiring and coaching colleagues will be an important part of the job.

Specific responsibilities
• Strengthening IRC’s concepts in communication and sharing them across the organisation and with the partners of IRC
• Conceptualising the design and implementation of communication strategies/plans
• Managing and supporting processes of media production
• Contributing to IRC’s vision on how to increase impact through communication and information sharing, in particular by being a member of the Global Information and Communication section
• Leading and coordinating the PR and marketing group
• Motivating and strengthening the capacities of (younger) colleagues

Specific requirements
• Experience of at least 7 years with designing and implementing communication strategies plans
• Experience with managing communication teams keeping them on track of objectives and perform at a high standard
• Experience with managing media production agencies and professionals such as graphic and web designers, copywriters, journalists, audiovisual producers.
• Experience with message development, copy writing, branding or imaging for communication and advocacy strategies of programmes and / or institutions
• Knowledge of concepts in communication and knowledge management (KM) to use in developing communication strategies and to contribute to the development of IRC’s vision on communication and KM
General requirements
• Master degree in communication or extension sciences or any other academic field relevant for the function
• Experience in working in an environment of researchers and knowledge professionals
• Experience with and interest in working in countries in Africa Asia and Latin America
• Ability to work in multicultural and multidisciplinary teams both in the Netherlands and in Africa, Asia and Latin America
• Willingness to travel and work overseas regularly
• Being a team worker and a team builder
• Excellent communication and intercultural skills and a well developed sense of humour
• Intermediate level computer skills, in particular familiarity with social media.
• Fluent in English (verbally and in writing) preferably a native English speaker and good command of one other language (French, Spanish, Portuguese)
• Based in or willing to be based in the Netherlands

Details of the position
You will be offered the function of (Senior) Programme Officer, BBRA scale 11 (min. € 2,850.92 and max. € 4,380.72) or scale 12 (min. €3,340.33 and max. €4,964.76) depending on your qualifications and experience. IRC has a working week of 36 hours. IRC welcomes applicants of any nationality, the post will require obtaining a working permit for The Netherlands (granted automatically for EU citizens), and will require being physically based in the Netherlands.
