KM4Dev community - funding models

This group is meant to attract anyone interested to contribute actively and creatively to develop long term and sustainable funding models to finance our community:

  1. how to fund our core management needs;
  2. how to fund our activities world wide;
  3. how to indentify sponsors to co-finance participation in events of members with little means.

Discussion and decision making on funding models is coordinated by the KM4Dev Core Group.

What is your opinion of going for a mixed financing model, mixed as in a combination of:

  1. voluntary contributions, acknowledged publicly if above a certain amount /year;
  2. institutional overhead funding project and business plan based;
  3. some form of crowd funding;
  4. specific projects funding;
  5. sponsoring of participants of key KM4Dev events, conditional;
  6. explore some from of  'micro payments for a service by non registered users';
  7. any other suggestions...

Dear all, nice to see that we are 17 here by now. Sorry that I do not show up regularly till now. I hope to improve, certainly now that since Nov 1st I have been granted garden leave ;-)

I hope to update the wiki page with thoughts in funding models soon.

In the meantime please share here your views and ideas on how to secure the various funding needs we have as a community.

I would say, make it simple. We don't have a legal status. Nancy said in Seattle she would be willing to administrate the collected funds... She or someone else from the community could manage it.

Following Johannes contribution, we could arrange a yearly crowdfunding campaign and harvest some contributions.

If the core team thinks that an annual crowd-funding drive for our general expenses is a good idea, I'd be willing to work on piloting such a campaign to see how much traction it would get. I guess would need two partners to do this with, prepare the campaign, manage it online.

Of course it would require clarifying the question to which 'entity' people would actually give their money to. Maybe that's what we should discuss first?

One place where we can keep our information and ideas on KM4Dev community funding models up to date is here: a Google Drive document. If you like to get full edit rights please let me know.

We all get a great deal out of our engagement in KM4Dev. Maybe you would be happy to express appreciation through a regular voluntary contribution. Crowd funding works!
