(posted by Josien)Dear Nancy/Lucie, I am all set to serve you a nice dutch digestive but if I follow your list my recipe title does not turn into a link. what to do? (also: to edit this section to put my question here I had to click the "edit" which is actually located above this section) Josien
update: when I returned a few hours later my recipe title had turned into a link. Not sure whether it was someone´s kind interaction or a server needing some process-time, but I ´ve now been able to add my advocaat. What I am learning about wikis and the like: you have to simply be (very) persistant. Most of the groups I work with are not ready for work with wikis, or -rather- wiki technology is not ready for all publics.
Posted by Allison in response to Josien: I am curious to better understand what is it about wikis that makes them not ready for all publics. I am not sure if it because of the experience that you had when entering your recipe and the necessary persistancy or if it is something else. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on this (and am also interested to know what kind of alcohol you would recommend in your dutch digestive;-).
update from Nancy: Josien, what happened was that you had put formatting inside the wiki link page and the software did not make it into a link. I removed italics, and everything worked well. I learned something new from this! I appreciate that you came back! That initial persistence IS important. What I find is it gets easier, more natural feeling, over time. In terms of an 'easier wiki' I have liked http://www.writely.com which promotes itself as a collaborative writing tool. It is a wiki dressed up to feel like a word processor. Unfortunately they are moving sites and there are no signups available.
Note from Eric: Folks, do you think that this discussion stuff would do better on the Discussion tab of the Cookbook wiki page? that's what that tab/feature is for. One initial drawback is that it's not immediately "in your face" for new users stumbling onto the cookbook page. but that could be remedied by a nice bold "This is the wiki page for the Cookbook section of our wiki... please edit to add your own stuff. Or, to join the wiki DISCUSSION about this section which includes tips on use, CLICK ON THE DISCUSSION TAB AT THE TOP." ... Seem smart? Estephan
Note from Nancy: Great idea! Let's do it. I will try and come back to do this later, but if someone else wants to do it, GO FOR IT! (And another tip. If you click on "watch this page" at the bottom of the edit box, you will get email alerts when the page changes. I wish the alert indicated WHAT changed, but hey, that's what we've got!)
From Eric: OK, I forged ahead and moved the Discussion here (alarming feeling to just move stuff around a lot, but that's one of the things that wikis are about... I imagine eventually questions of process or authority are going to have to arise from the mix) ... Here is another tip: I recommend finishing every contribution you put on this page with four tilde characters (~).... that causes the system to automatically insert a name and date signature for the entry. That will also allow us to phase out our "note from eric..." prefixes... Estephan 11:43, 17 May 2006 (EDT)
