Twitter is one commercial micro-blogging service. Another is identi.ca. Identi.ca uses an open protocol server based on XMPP that is being developed by Controlez-Vous.

It's great to learn about all these tools and their utility for development and/or collaboration. I do find that discussion often focuses on specific brand name commercial services like Skype, Facebook, or Twitter in a way that substitutes the brand for a whole range of useful technologies. To me the effect is insidious and contributes to "editing out" alternative methods for adopting, adapting and developing communication tools - kind of like referring to mobile communication as "Nokia", or transportation as "Toyota", and thereby ignoring cellular phone makers and bicycles.
