Using the LNGO Questionnaire as a tool to facilitate workshops

An important outcome of the workshop was, that the LNGOQ is not so much a statistical tool in the academic-scientific sense, but that it has great value in bringing about discussion and exploration in an organisation about KM and Learning, which does not start in the empty space, but has a concrete, tangible and visual starting point.

Urs Egger has mentioned an interesting application with a smaller group: he has asked the group members to individually fill in the Excel version of the questionnaire. They printed all the radar diagrams and hung them all up on a large wall. The group stood in front of the charts and discussed the different shapes and characteristics.

Bruce Britton in the initial document (p. 26) suggests to let members of a group stand on a line (representing a specific dimension), each indicating his/her value, which can lead to a good discussion:

During the workshop, we have extended this arrangement:

9 persons have marked the spider diagram (1 person in the centre, 8 persons each marking the end of one dimension). Then, people participating in the workshop have been divided into 8 groups and each person was asked to position himself on a dimension according to the value that he/she considered as appropriate. Then the facilitator started a discussion.

The advantage of this process is that each person is physically involved in the process and literally has to take a position. This involves also the intuition of people as an additional "instrument" or "assessor".

This is how the "human diagram" looked:
