Integrated Seed Sector Development (ISSD) Program Ethiopia

Program Background

Integrated Seed Sector Development (ISSD) Program in Ethiopia envisions the development of a vibrant, commercial and pluralistic seed sector so that quality seed of superior varieties are available to a larger number of farmers, thereby contributing to agriculture for food security and economic development in Ethiopia. The Program is made possible through strengthening the development and operation of regional, national and international seed companies; consolidation and scaling up of local seed businesses; promotion of partnerships and innovations; support the development of enabling policies and institutions; and facilitation of support services such as research and studies, sharing experiences and lessons learnt and capacity development. Program phase I ran from mid 2009 to end of 2011; Program phase II is planned from 2011 to end of 2015. The Program is coordinated through regional units - Bahir Dar University, Haramaya University, Hawassa University, Mekelle University and Oromia Seed Enterprise - with support from Wageningen UR Centre for Development Innovation, and working together with key seed value chain actors at local, regional and national level. The Program is financed through the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

In this connection, the following positions are required to be filled by qualified individuals.

 

National Knowledge Sharing and Capacity Development Coordinator (1)

Work background

Sharing experiences and lessons learnt is one of the components under ISSD. Through this component the diversity of advances and outputs of the ISSD program are known to the partners and stakeholders at kebelle, woreda, regional, national and international levels, with the goal of making a significant contribution to seed sector development in Ethiopia. To achieve this goal a wide range of documentation materials, communication channels and publications would be used to foster continuous sharing of experiences and learning of lessons within the ISSD program components and with partners at all levels of the Ethiopian seed sector.

As part of its implementation strategy ISSD Program would like to recruit one National Knowledge Sharing and Capacity Development Coordinator .

Major Duties and Responsibilities

The National Knowledge Sharing and Capacity Development Coordinator:

  • Strategies (or operationalizes) knowledge management and capacity building program that play a leading/ brokering role and puts strong profile of ISSD Ethiopia with its local, national and international partners.
  • Supports regional units in continuously sharing of experiences and expertise through organizing seminars, workshops, discussion forums, seed fairs, etc at different levels to enhance sharing and consolidation of knowledge and experiences gained
  • Documents various products of the ISSD program in such a way that it is suitable for storage and retrieval system
  • Facilitates the development of a wide range of documentation materials, communication channels and publication to enhance a wide scale sharing of best practices experiences, lessons and innovations in the seed value chain
  • Identifies lessons to be shared within and outside the program
  • Develops and promotes templates to be used by the program to share lessons Facilitates publication of flyers, newsletters, magazines, books, workshop proceedings and supports publication and circulation of scientific articles emanating from ISSD capacity building and research
  • Facilitates development of ISSD web site, documentary videos and other audio-visuals
  • Designs mechanisms for capacity building for actors/beneficiaries with regard to knowledge sharing
  • Arranges trainings and facilitates capacity building mechanisms/processes

 

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge in management information system with regard to seed system/agriculture
  • Working knowledge in information communication technology and computer science and multimedia
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and written in English and Amharic
  • Proven ability to work in multidisciplinary and multi-stakeholder working environments
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills

 

Education and Experience

Minimum of MA/M.Sc. degree from recognized university in Communication, Journalism, Agricultural Extension or related fields to knowledge management and sharing; and a minimum of 5 years of work experience

 

Conditions and remuneration

  • Contract up to December 31, 2012; with possible annual extension up until the end of December 2015
  • This position is stationed at PMU Office in Addis Ababa with field travel to regions
  • Salary 11, 000 ETB (including provident fund from both employer and employee) and with additional allowances for field work
