The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the world’s leading organization working for the rights of children, is inviting applications for this position.

PURPOSE OF THE POST 
Under the overall supervision of Communication Manager, to provide support to the Media and External Relations team in the area of social media:

SPECIFIC TASKS OF THIS CONSUTANCY:

  • Develop and implement UNICEF Ethiopia strategic approach to social media. The consultant, in collaboration with colleagues, will draft a Social Media Strategy including workplan.
  • Develop and implement UNICEF Ethiopia social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, Delicious, YouTube, BlibTV, Slideshare, Yammer, Blog etc including posting of messages, photos and story contents, either routinely, ad hoc or in line with a meeting, visit, event or campaign.
  • Gather, initiate, edit and develop content (stories, photos and audio visual material) to be posted on the social media platforms and Intranet (Ethio Icon) and Internet. 
  • Explore template and use of digital newsletter to partners 
  • Draft monthly digital newsletter
  • Assist with updating the UNICEF Ethiopia Internet
  • And assist with providing content of new Internet (Reddot 2) structure.
  • Organise session to coach UNICEF Ethiopia staff members with the use of social media.
  • Set up monitoring tools to assess traffic generated to UNICEF Ethiopia social media platforms and how this translates in action from the users. 
  • Collate list with passwords / access / expiry dates of social media platforms used by UNICEF Ethiopia 
  • Provide monthly reports to the communication manager on the amount and quality of content being created and provide recommendations on what can be done to improve our on-line presence. 
  • Keep track of initiatives by other UN agencies, NGO’s, partners and donors that may be relevant to our work.
  • Maintain photo and video library of AV production produced and disseminated.
  • Document work flow and process related to social media, Intranet and Internet management and posting.

EXPECTED DELIVERABLES
Social media related

  • The draft social media strategy, including Internet and Intranet outline and GANNT chart should be submitted within 1 month.
  • Content for social media platforms initiated, gathered, written and edited at daily basis.
  • Daily posts at the social media platforms. Posts related to the donor funding the position should be intensified and given preference.
  • Compile list with passwords / access / expiry dates of social media platforms used by UNICEF Ethiopia collated within the first week of the consultancy.
  • Bi-monthly social media orientation / training sessions of minimal 2 hours per sessions for ECO staff should be conducted.
  • Monthly digital newsletter produced as from the second month of the consultancy.
  • Having set up a social media monitoring system as from the second month of the consultancy.
  • Provide monthly reports based on the Intranet monitoring system.

Internet related:

  • The present UNICEF Ethiopia Internet should be updated regularly – once materials are available, but at least bi-weekly.
  • UNICEF ECO Internet should be up to date and revamped – 3 months after receiving Reddot Version 2 from HQ
  • Having set up an Intranet monitoring system as from the time the Reddot version 2 has gone life.
  • Provide monthly reports based on the Intranet monitoring system.

Intranet related

  • The Intranet home page and MER page should be updated regularly – once materials are available, but at least bi-weekly.

Management

  • Every month, mile stones and outputs as set out in the TOR will be discussed with supervisor and monthly work plans produced and monitored.

METHODOLOGY

  • The consultant will make him/herself acquainted with present social media, Intranet and Internet set up for ECO through discussion with MER team members and hands on exploration of tools.
  • The consultant is expected to draft social media strategy based on findings and experience through desk review and discussions.
  • The consultant will from the start been tasked to feed into existing social media – either though social media requests provided to MER by HQ or initiated locally.
  • The Communication Manager will provide guidance / support at daily basis – especially at the beginning of the consultancy.
  • The Communication Manger will hold weekly section meetings to guide the work.
  • Every month, mile stones and outputs as set out in the TOR will be discussed and monthly workplans produced and monitored.
  • The consultant will be requested to provide content for the social media platforms – either through desk review or through travel to programme sites.
  • The Consultant will be requested to work with programme staff and IT when required.
  • The consultant will report to the Media and External Relations Section head or OIC.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF THE TEAM MEMBERS: 
Education requirements: Advanced University degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, International Studies, Social Sciences or equivalent professional work experience in the social media, knowledge management, communication or IT area, combined with a university degree in a related discipline.


Work Experience:

Desirable three years of relevant professional work experience.
Language requirement: Fluency in English and Knowledge of local language.
Required Skills/Competencies:

  • Proven knowledge and experience using social media for development messaging.
  • Excellent English writing skills.
  • Proven experience in strategic planning, specifically in communication.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Willing and able to travel.
  • Communication, networking and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to research, design and execute ideas, and to be able to transfer knowledge and skills.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment.
  • Excellent teamwork skills.
  • Solid understanding of the social media and communication universe in Ethiopia, High ethical standards and understanding of sensitivities relating to child related issues and working in a political sensitive environment.
  • Strong understanding of UNICEF programmes and policy, including knowledge of youth, participation and partnership goals, as well as sound interpretation and judgment to present these programmes and policies in a way that enhances UNICEF’s image.
  • Strong commitment to advancing the rights or women and children and life-long learning
