KM4Dev 2002 Workshop Outputs

The KM4dev 2002 workshop focussed on the experiences of development agencies in carrying out internal and/or external Knowledge Management initiatives.

After a welcome and introductions, Day 1 began by - asking the right questions - the first step in the development of a FAQ resource for the community, using the questions provided in the online survey. Three rotating Peer Assists were also conducted by Jennifer Spence, from UNDP's Drylands Development Initiative, Jawed Ludin from BOND and Esther Oettli from Helvetas, in which they sought assistance from workshop participants in resolving issues stemming from their KM initiatives.

Bruno Laporte from the World Bank, Yared Kiflom Araya from UNDP's CEA-SURF and Marc Steinlin from Helvetas all gave presentations on their organisational experiences with KM. The day concluded with two 'Birds of a Feather' sessions on new tools, approaches and techniques, first on Social Network Analysis by Holger Illi of BMZ and lastly on online facilitation by Nancy White of Full Circle Associates.

Day 2's agenda was revised to permit continued knowledge sharing between participants on concrete issues. More presentations on organisational experiences were made by Prof. Kenneth King of the University of Edinburgh, Barbara Brown of CIDA and Brendan O'Brian ofUNFPA.

Over lunch, a 'Birds of a Feather' session was presented on using Collaborative Technologies by Mark Faul (Dgroups) and Steve Song (PostNuke) of Bellanet, and Marc Steinlin of Helvetas. Nancy White also continued the previous day's session on online facilitation.

In the afternoon, three more Peer Assists were introduced by Shoko Ishikawa of UNIFEM, Geoff Barnard of IDS and John Simon of USAID.

The day concluded with 2-person team FAQ consolidation and the 'Five Things in a Box' exercise - inspired by Marc Steinlin saying he took five things away from the last KM Dev meetings - where each person shared what they will take away from this workshop. An After Action Review was conducted after the thank-yous and wrap-up.
